So many are tweeting me about the film and why I am so against it. I can’t explain myself well under 140 chracters, so I will explain it to you all here on the other support page.
Many are saying that Mara Leveritt says nothing but good things about the film on her facebook page. Well, she sold the rights to her book Devil’s Knot to the film. The film will be based on her book, but not entirely. In Hollywood, once you sell the rights to your book, you have no control of what is going to be done in the film itself about your book. Example of books becoming films: Anne Rice’s Queen of The Damned which was made into a terrible film. Danny Sugerman’s No One Here Gets Out Alive, aJim Morrison biography done by Oliver Stone called The Doors. Anne Rice flipped out at how terrible her vampire books were turned into films, especially the second vampire movie. Jim Morrison’s family were not thrilled about The Doors.
So as much as many are saying ‘Mara approves this film, it’s about her book’ Mara has to approve it because she sold her rights to the book. She profits from the film. So of course she’s not going to say anything bad about it. I wonder if she has read the script yet.
The same goes for Jason Baldwin, Jesse Misskelly, Damien’s sister and his mother. They all got money to be advisors for the film, so of course they back this film up 100%. The only one who’s ever refused to have anything with this film has been Damien Echols. This goes way back to when he was still in prison. They have been trying to make Devil’s Knot for many years, even picking the wonderful Michael Pitt to play Damien in 2003. Nothing happened until now. Damien didn’t like the script then and he doesn’t like it now due to the fact that he is painted in a very ugly light. They are going to paint Damien Echols like a psychopath “ringleader” goth teen who has a thing for bashing kittens and puppies, staking them in the head while drinking human blood. Sounds like the story of Jeffrey Dahmer doesn’t it?
For those who say ‘Well Jason approves this movie and he was actually there! He was in prison too!’ - Jason is not the one being painted as a psychopath “ringleader” teenager here. Neither is Jesse. All this falls entirely on the character of “Damien Echols”. Meanwhile the real life Damien Echols has to deal with the fact that this film is going to make him look like the bad guy while dealing with all the other bullshit he has to deal with in his daily life.
Let me add that both Jason and Jesse will profit from this film as well being that they are advisors. It must hurt Damien badly to know that his good friend Jason could betray him in this way.
The Director of Devils Knot, Atom Egoyan, is now saying that the film will be “inspired” by Mara’s book. If that is so, then why is he using real names? Why use Damien’s real name?
To add more to his pain, Damien’s own mother and sister sold him out to this film as “advisors”. As much as they say they know Damien because they are his family, it can’t be more further from the truth. His sister barely visited him the 18 years he was locked up. With his mother - there are issues there I won’t get into, but she too hardly knows her son. The only one who knows Damien well, visited him every single week, took care of him, stood by his side, helped with this case and was 85% responsible for the release of Damien, Jesse and Jason’s on August 19th, 2011 is Lorri Davis. Lorri is the only one who truly knows Damien and she is not even mentioned in the film. Meanwhile people who hardly know Damien are advisors and will help promote this film.
It’s all about making money. Everyone attached to this Devils Knot film is making money off all the pain and misery that Damien had to endure for 19 years. Facing death on a daily basis on death row, not to mention the brutal living enviorment that is prison. And lets not forget the pain those three little innocent boys endured when they were savagely murdered.
This film will do nothing but destroy Damien’s reputation. There will be people who know nothing about the case and will watch this film. People will walk away from the theater reviling Damien. There will be those who will despise him because they will believe what they just saw on the screen.
And that’s why I am against this film.
I refuse to put money into the pockets of these people who are only interested in profiting from someone’s pain and the loss of three innocents children.
